Since establishing roots in Northeastern Ohio over half a century ago, Hill, Barth & King LLC (HBK) has amassed more than 10,000 employees.  Employees in HBK’s 12 offices throughout Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania netted over $37.7 million in revenue in 2006 making it the 61st-largest firm on Inside Public Accounting’s 2007 list of the largest accounting firms in the U.S. 

HBK offers accounting and tax services, auditing, business advice and counseling, business valuations, health care business solutions, human resource consulting and IT services to clients spanning multiple industries.  The firm offers investment advisory services through affiliated entity HBK Sorce Financial, an independent firm that specializes in comprehensive personal financial planning and asset management services for individuals, families and small businesses.  The affiliate was formed in mid-2001, when Erie, Pa.-based The Sorce Financial Group merged with HBK Financial, bringing with it more than $400 million in assets under management.  Today, HBK Sorce Financial has over $1 billion in assets under supervision.

New leaf

In August 2004, HBK adopted a new approach to senior-level management.  For the first time in its 55-year history, the firm named a managing principal and chief executive officer, Christopher M. Allegretti, and chief operating officer, Phillip L. Wilson.  With the firm since 1984, Allegretti assists the executive committee on long-range initiatives and the overall firm strategy.  Wilson, with HBK since 1987, has primary responsibility to oversee the firm's day-to day operations and for ensuring that the firm continues to meet exacting accounting standards.

Naming a CEO and COO was part of an overall strategy to further focus HBK on maintaining and expanding the quality and depth of its services, and to delivering increased value to the firm’s clients.

“The accounting firms of the future will be significantly different than those of our predecessors,” said Allegretti at the time of his promotion.  “Clients expect excellence.  We will continue to focus on providing the highest level of traditional tax and attest services while expanding our ability to provide other valuable services in such areas of financial services, business valuations, cost segregation studies and concentrated industry expertise.  As a firm, HBK will continue to make investments in our people and resources to ensure that we have the people and skill sets necessary to help guide our clients to achieve their goals.”  Wilson added, “My new position entails ensuring that our systems of checks and balances continue to surpass industry requirements and that we continue to provide our clients with continually improved services.”

Seeking team players

HBK is a large regional firm with 12 locations in three different states, but it still fosters an excessively team-oriented approach to its employees by offering extensive opportunities for training and advancement, as well as an excellent benefit package.  Training continues throughout employment at the firm, with organized tiered training for the first three years of employment, and then seminars and CPE courses for professional members thereafter.  The firm says it's "truly dedicated to our team members and their success.” In 2007, HBK was named one of the Best Employers in Ohio by the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, Ohio Manufacturers’ Education Council and the Ohio Society of Human Resource Managers.
